A PASSIONATE ARTIST MAKING BEAUTIFUL PAINTINGS AND PRINTS
My name is William Saladino, and I have been painting and sketching since I was a young child. I also do printmaking, photography, and art restoration. As an artist, my works reflect the way I perceive the world.
I was blessed to have been born into an American Sicilian family who encouraged me from a very young age to be an artist. "All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he or she grows up” is a Picasso quote that my parents applied to my own life. I continued to draw and make art throughout my childhood and managed to sign up for art classes throughout middle school and high school in Indianapolis, Indiana, where I was born and raised. At the age of 18, I was introduced to Distinguished Professor Rudy Pozzatti, who later became my mentor in the Fine Arts Department at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. It was there that I was accepted into the BFA program in printmaking and graduated from in 1976.
After earning my BFA from IU, I was encouraged by my professors Rudy Pozzatti and Marvin Lowe to attend graduate school. Before applying to graduate schools out West, I planned to travel. My travels on a student budget took me around the world through 17 countries and 4 continents over a 9-month period. During my travels, I filled 7 sketchbooks with drawings and watercolor sketches of places that I visited and people whom I met along the way. These images would 40 years later become the inspiration for a series of oil paintings and YouTube painting videos (will saladino, paint with will). After my globe-trotting adventure, I was accepted into the MFA program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where I earned my MFA in Printmaking in 1981. After graduate school, I worked for a gallery in the Baltimore, Maryland area called Marson's Ltd. where I traveled to art centers, art museums, colleges, and universities through the Midwest and upstate New York as a gallery rep giving lectures on the history of printmaking and selling 19th- and 20th-century Japanese woodblock prints. That position gave my artwork the opportunity to be on display in galleries in several Midwestern college towns and art centers. My next art position was in Indianapolis at Lyman Brothers as an art conservator where I restored paintings and did some commissioned work. Both of those art-related positions gave me a deeper insight into original historical paintings and prints, which influenced my own artworks. From 1984 until the Summer of 2018 I taught children fine arts.
The images on this web site include three generations: My father Peter (08/10/1908 - 05/19/1991), myself, and both of my sons Anthony and John (08/22/1985 - 12/21/2018)
"The artist must train not only his eye but also his soul.” “Every man who steeps himself in the spiritual possibilities of his heart is a valuable helper in the building of the spiritual pyramid which will someday reach to heaven." - Wassily Kandinsky
“I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say 'he feels deeply, he feels tenderly'.”
― Vincent Willem van Gogh
